Civil Partnerships

A civil partnership is a legally recognised relationship between two people of the same sex. A civil partnership only exists once it is registered. Once registered, it confers the same rights and responsibilities as marriage.

Currently, opposite-sex couples can register a civil partnership in England and Wales but not in Scotland. Civil Partners have much the same rights as married couples.

If your relationship breaks down, we can advise you on the merits of settling your case or pursuing an application to court. We are able to advise you on your rights in relation to the division of property and assets and access and maintenance for children. Civil partners may apply for any of the orders on or after filing a divorce petition. However, with the exception for maintenance pending suit, the application cannot be heard until the decree nisi and no order will take effect until the decree absolute.
